For the B.A. degree in American Studies, a minimum of 123 credits is required.
Students may declare the American Studies major in their fourth semester or after and must have at least a 2.00 average in coursework already completed. Transfer courses from other universities must be at the level of C or above.
GENERAL EDUCATION: 45 credits
BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: 24 credits
- 3 credits each in Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Other Cultures
- Foreign Language (0-12 credits, depending on your demonstrated proficiency)
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: 33 credits
The major is 33 credits of coursework, divided as follows:
Core courses:
9 credits, which must include:
- AMST 100 Introduction (offered every semester)
- AMST 491W American Themes, American Eras twice.
This is a writing intensive course, offered every semester on a different topic and by a different professor.
Options include:
- AMST 491 Imagining the Civil War (Dr. Berkey)
- AMST 491 National Security Policy (Dr. Cimbala)
- AMST 491 Politics, Protest and Social Change in 20th-Century America (Dr. Gallagher)
- AMST 491 Slavery in the American Imagination (Dr. Blockett)
- AMST 491 America and the Environment (Dr. Macauley)
- AMST 491 American Music (Dr. Greene)
Electives:
24 credits in three out of four of the following disciplinary fields, half of which need to be at 400-level. The 400-level course could include an internship.
- American Literature
- American History
- American Arts and Humanities (music, art, philosophy, religion)
- American Social Sciences (sociology, economics, communications, political science, etc.)
Other appropriate coursework may be substituted with the approval of the American Studies adviser. Some advanced courses may require prerequisites.
